Materials and Construction Methods
Makers primarily utilised wood as the structural foundation, frequently employing sturdy Chinese elm for large marriage cabinets and cupboards. Artisans applied multiple coats of lacquer to the wooden surfaces to create a smooth, resilient finish before adding painted details and gold leaf highlights.
Surface ornamentation often incorporates intricate hand-painted floral decoration and pictorial scenes executed in contrasting pigments over the red ground. Metal elements such as brass hinges and decorative faceplates provide functional closure while complementing the rich painted schemes.
