How do I date a mahogany mirror stand?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods of the frame, the thickness of the mahogany timber, and the style of the base supports. Georgian and Regency pieces often show lighter scaling and delicate brass hardware, whereas Victorian examples tend to be heavier with deeper carving or turned uprights. The mirror glass itself offers further clues, as older plates may display subtle imperfections or distortion. Later Edwardian items frequently incorporate more restrained inlay work and machine-made components alongside traditional joinery.

What is the difference between a cheval and a swing mirror?

A cheval mirror is a tall, floor-standing piece designed to show your whole reflection from head to toe. It rests within its own freestanding upright frame and heavy base. A swing mirror is much smaller and intended to sit on top of a dressing table, chest of drawers, or dedicated stand. While both pivot to alter the viewing angle, their scale and primary placement in a room are entirely different.

Were shaving stands used only by men?

Traditional shaving stands and gentleman's washstands were originally commissioned for male grooming routines in Georgian and Victorian bedchambers. They incorporated adjustable or magnifying mirror glass alongside small platforms for basins and shaving tackle. Over time, many of these versatile pieces transitioned into general vanity and dressing use. Their compact footprints and adjustable glass make them practical for modern bathrooms and bedrooms alike.

How should I care for the mahogany and glass?

Maintain the mahogany frame by applying a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber and preserve its deep colour. Avoid placing the stand in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out. Clean the mirror glass using a soft cloth and a gentle glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the frame. This prevents moisture from seeping into the historic wooden joints surrounding the plate.
