What is a linen press?

A linen press is a tall storage unit that combines shelving or sliding trays behind upper doors with drawer storage underneath. Originally designed to store folded household linens flat before the widespread use of hanging wardrobes. Over time, many of these pieces were converted internally to take clothes hangers while retaining their traditional multi-door exterior appearance.

How do I date a wardrobe?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, timber choices, and decorative motifs present in the carcase. Eighteenth-century examples often display hand-cut dovetails and native timber linings. Later revival pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian periods show mechanical uniformity in their joints and frequently utilise lighter mahogany veneers.

Are these wardrobes dismantled?

Many large Georgian and revival wardrobes break down into sections for transport and installation. The cornice, base, and sides often separate from the central hanging or shelving compartment. Checking the construction reveals whether a piece utilises traditional knock-down bolts or fixed joints.

Where should I place one?

These large storage units require considerable wall space and ceiling height due to their imposing proportions. Bedrooms and dressing rooms provide the natural environment for their original purpose. Measuring ceiling clearance is essential before installation, particularly with breakfront or cornice-topped examples.
