How do I identify a genuine piece?

Examine the construction methods visible inside the drawers and at the back, looking for hand-cut dovetails and timber shrinkage consistent with age. Original brass hardware and secondary woods matching the period provide further confirmation. Compare the proportions and timber figures against known examples from the same reign. Subtle details in the carving and foot shape often clarify the date of manufacture.

Were these pieces used daily?

Domestic items from this era served active households for writing, dining and storing clothing or linen. Chests of drawers, bureaus and tables were central to daily domestic administration and comfort. Their robust construction in oak, mahogany and walnut ensured survival through generations of continuous handling. Wear patterns on handles and drawer edges typically reflect this utilitarian history.

How should I care for timber surfaces?

Maintain a stable indoor climate away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting or veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished finish without chemical buildup. Apply traditional wax sparingly when the wood appears dry, buffing gently to maintain the natural lustre. Avoid placing damp items directly onto polished tabletops.

What is the difference between periods?

Early reigns like George I and George II favour walnut timbers, cabriole legs and heavier proportions, transitioning into the cleaner lines of George III mahogany pieces. Regency items introduce darker woods, brass inlay and classical revival motifs. Later twentieth-century revivals copy these earlier silhouettes using older construction techniques or newer timber stocks. Examining the secondary woods and interior construction helps distinguish original eighteenth-century work from later interpretations.
