What is a bureau bookcase?

A bureau bookcase is a tall piece of furniture that combines a lower writing desk section with an upper glazed or panelled bookcase. The lower portion retains the characteristic sloping fall front and internal compartments. These combined units served as multifunctional library and administrative furniture in Georgian homes. They allowed owners to store books above while maintaining a private, enclosed writing space below.

How do I use a fall front desk?

The fall front is unlocked and lowered horizontally to rest upon pull-out wooden support lopers, creating an immediate writing surface. This design keeps stationery and correspondence neatly concealed when not in use. Inside, the arrangement of small drawers and pigeonholes provides dedicated spaces for letters and inkwells. The sturdy hinges and lopers are engineered to support the downward pressure of writing.

How do I identify George III furniture?

Identification relies on examining timber choices, architectural proportions, and decorative motifs characteristic of the late 18th century. Pieces from this era often feature rich mahogany, precise dovetailing, and understated classical detailing. Cabinet work shifted from heavier early Georgian styles toward lighter, more refined proportions influenced by designers like Sheraton and Chippendale. Original hardware and secondary woods further aid in dating the piece accurately.

What is flame mahogany veneer?

Flame mahogany veneer is a thin slice of wood cut from specific sections of the mahogany log where the grain swirls. This creates a dramatic, fiery pattern used on prominent exterior surfaces. Craftsmen book-matched these veneers to create symmetrical patterns across drawer fronts and fall lids. This technique maximised the visual impact of highly figured timber.
