French Wooden Side Tables
These French wooden side tables bring everyday utility and regional character into a room through walnut, oak, fruitwood and kingwood construction.
French Wooden Side Tables
When hunting for french wooden side tables, you encounter forms ranging from console tables and bedside cabinets to occasional lamp tables, coffee tables, and prep tables. The selection spans centuries from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century and into the nineteen thirties, drawing on regional identities like French Provincial, French Country, and French Normandy.
You frequently meet walnut, oak, pine, and fruitwood examples shaped by styles such as Louis XV Revival, French Rococo Revival, and rustic farmhouse aesthetics. Pieces include two-tier designs, demi lune shapes, kidney-shaped tables with parquetry inlay, and work tables fitted with drawers.
The origins stretch from provincial workshops to sophisticated urban cabinetmakers working in kingwood and mahogany, sometimes incorporating marble tops, brass details, and mirrored tiers. Whether you select a scrub top kitchen table or a marquetry lamp table, each object reflects the specific domestic needs of its era.
Construction and Materials
Cabinetmakers built these tables using solid regional timbers like oak, walnut, fruitwood, chestnut, and beech, often pairing them with softer pine for internal or secondary structures. Surfaces frequently display intricate marquetry and parquetry inlay executed in exotic woods such as kingwood.
Decorative embellishments rely on applied or cast brass and ormolu mounts, contrasting with ebonised finishes, painted surfaces, and polished marble inserts on console tops. Joinery methods range from pegged joints on rustic serving tables to refined turnings, bobbin legs, and faux bamboo detailing.

Several items disguise their utility entirely, including a freestanding jewellery box and a faux bamboo cabinet acting as a bedside companion.
Evaluating Quality and Finish
The standard of a piece rests upon the selection of timber, where figured walnut or well-matched fruitwood veneers indicate greater initial investment than plain pine or utility oak. Superior examples demonstrate precision in the execution of parquetry inlay and the snug fit of drawer components.
Distinction also arises in the retention of original hardware, such as brass pulls and ormolu mounts, alongside the structural integrity of turned legs and tiered shelves. Tables that preserve their untouched patination and original marble tops hold a clearer material integrity than those altered over generations.

Maintain polished wood and marquetry by applying natural beeswax sparingly and buffing with a soft cloth to preserve the historic patination.
