This Victorian Rococo Revival jardiniere table from 1880 takes the form of a warm brown walnut bloom trough with a removable metal liner. The piece displays intricate floral marquetry inlay across its surfaces, accompanied by decorative ormolu mounts at the corners and sweeping cabriole legs. The serpentine top edge features detailed gilt metal moulding, while the body shows natural grain variation in the timber and delicate floral decoration. Measuring 78 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, the table fits naturally in a bay window or living room to hold potted plants and floral arrangements. The design works well in traditional interiors alongside classic furniture, providing a decorative surface and a practical waterproof container for indoor display.

FAQs

A Victorian jardiniere table is a specialised piece of accent furniture constructed during the nineteenth century to hold indoor plants and floral displays. These tables typically feature a recessed compartment fitted with a metal liner to protect the surrounding timber from moisture.

Cabinetmakers commonly utilised figured hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often decorated with marquetry inlays made from contrasting woods. Decorative mounts were traditionally crafted from cast brass or gilt bronze, whilst interior liners were formed from zinc or tin.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut marquetry veneers, hand-chased brass or ormolu mounts, and natural signs of age such as light wood shrinkage or oxidisation. Look for original removable zinc or lead-lined interior trays designed specifically for holding potted plants.

Position the table in an area with natural light, such as a bay window or hallway entrance, to showcase indoor foliage or botanical arrangements. It can also function as a decorative container when fitted with a glass top or filled with curated objects.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the veneer. Ensure the metal liner remains completely watertight before adding living plants to prevent moisture from damaging the surrounding marquetry.
