Will a vintage double bed fit modern mattresses?

Many older French frames deviate slightly from contemporary standard mattress sizes. Checking the internal length and width between the side rails before purchase ensures proper compatibility. Custom mattresses or simple slat adjustments frequently resolve minor sizing discrepancies in antique bed frames.

How do I identify a Louis XV style bed?

Louis XV style frames are characterised by asymmetrical flowing curves, cabriole legs, and naturalistic carved motifs like foliage and flowers. They avoid straight architectural lines in favour of organic, sweeping contours. This aesthetic developed during the eighteenth century and saw major revivals throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Are brass and iron beds sturdy?

Metal bed frames from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries utilise heavy-gauge brass and iron components. Their robust construction handles everyday use reliably. Original side irons and corner brackets must be inspected to ensure the assembled frame remains square and stable.

How do I care for polished walnut wood?

Maintaining walnut timber requires simple dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight. Excessive heat and moisture can dry out or damage antique French polishes. Applying a traditional beeswax polish occasionally helps nourish the wood grain and preserves the original lustre.
