How do I style a console table?

Position the piece against a main wall in an entrance hall or reception room to create an immediate focal point. Pair it with a tall mirror or artwork hung directly above to balance the visual weight. Keep surface objects minimal to let the carved woodwork and marble top remain visible. Small decorative bowls or candlesticks complement the historical character without cluttering the surface.

Are these tables sturdy enough for daily use?

Most console tables rely on wall attachment brackets for stability, particularly those with only two front legs. Ensure the piece is properly secured to the wall to prevent tipping. Heavier marble tops add substantial weight that keeps the freestanding variants stable. Treat the wooden surfaces and delicate gilding with care during everyday cleaning.

How do I tell eighteenth century from revival pieces?

Examine the construction methods and timber ageing underneath the piece for clues to its true age. Eighteenth century originals often show hand-cut joinery and subtle wear patterns consistent with extended use. Revival pieces from the nineteenth century typically feature machine-sawn elements and standardised hardware fittings. Stylistic proportions and the type of secondary woods used also help identify the exact period.

What is the difference between a console and a side table?

Console tables are specifically designed to be placed against a wall, frequently featuring flat backs and decorative front legs. They often require wall fastening for total structural support. Side tables are fully freestanding furniture items finished on all four sides. They move easily around a room and function independently without wall anchors.
