Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

An overmantel mirror traditionally sits directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to anchor the room and reflect light from windows. Ensure the wall fixings match the substantial weight of the timber and gesso frame before mounting.

Foxed glass refers to the natural degradation of the silver backing inside older mirror plates over time. This process produces dark patches and speckles across the reflective surface. Many buyers prize this characteristic for confirming the genuine age of an antique glass plate.

Can leaner mirrors stand safely on the floor?

Full-length leaner mirrors are designed to rest securely against a wall without permanent wall hanging brackets. Their heavy timber frames provide the necessary stability for floor placement. Additional safety straps attached to the wall prevent tipping in busy domestic environments.

How do I clean an antique gilt frame?

Dust antique gilt frames gently using a soft, dry brush to protect the delicate gold leaf and gesso decoration. Avoid using commercial cleaning liquids or water on gilded surfaces. Moisture can damage the historic composition and cause the gesso layers to lift from the wood.
