What is an english regency table?

An english regency table is a piece of furniture dating from the early nineteenth century or later revivals, characterised by classical proportions and fine timber. These pieces include dining formats, card tables, and drum tables designed for formal and domestic interiors.

How were card tables used?

Card tables were kept folded against the wall when not in use and opened up for evening card games. Their dual-purpose design made them versatile additions to drawing rooms and reception areas.

How do I identify the wood?

Makers relied heavily on dense tropical hardwoods, particularly mahogany and rosewood, often choosing figured veneers for visual impact. Oak and other secondary timbers appear in internal drawer construction and structural framing.

Where should I place a drum table?

A drum table suits a central position in a study or library, where its deep drawers offer accessible storage. Its circular footprint allows it to sit comfortably away from walls while maintaining balance in the room.
