How do I hang a heavy antique mirror safely?

Heavy carved wall mirrors require secure fixings anchored directly into wall studs or masonry rather than relying on standard plasterboard plugs. Professional mirror hangers utilise heavy-duty steel brackets or mirror plates screwed into the structural wooden frame. Weight distribution matters immensely with large nineteenth-century pieces, so ensure the hanging wire or integrated D-rings are robust enough to support the entire mass permanently.

Are antique mirror plates original?

Many antique mirrors retain their original glass plates, which often display characteristic foxing, minor dark spots, and light surface blemishes resulting from age. These natural imperfections confirm the historical authenticity of the piece. Some mirrors have received replacement glass over the decades if the original silvering degraded beyond usability or the plate suffered a breakage.

How do I date a carved wooden mirror?

Dating relies upon examining the construction techniques of the wooden frame, the style of the carved ornamentation, and the characteristics of the mirror plate. Eighteenth-century pieces often display hand- cut dovetails, pine backboards, and simpler joinery compared to later Victorian machinery methods. Stylistic indicators such as Rococo scrolls, Regency classical motifs, or Arts and Crafts simplicity also help narrow down the period of manufacture.
