How do I date a button tufted armchair?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, the turning of the legs, and the style of the upholstery framework. Nineteenth-century pieces often display heavier mahogany or walnut frames, whereas Edwardian and 1920s examples introduce lighter proportions or specific synthetic coverings like rexine. Makers' stamps on wooden legs or brass castors provide further chronological markers. Comparing the chair's silhouette against documented Victorian and Regency patterns helps narrow the decade of production.

Where were these armchairs used historically?

Library armchairs and desk chairs served gentlemen's studies and institutional offices for prolonged reading and writing tasks. Salon and bedroom chairs furnished formal entertaining spaces in large country houses and urban townhouses. Club chairs and wingback variants provided comfort in smoking rooms and drawing rooms. Their sturdy wood frames and deep upholstery accommodated relaxed domestic seating.

How do I care for leather upholstery?

Leather upholstery requires regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent grit accumulation in the tufted folds. Conditioning treatments help maintain suppleness and prevent the hide from drying out over time. Keeping antique leather away from direct sunlight and heat sources prevents fading and cracking. Gentle cleaning preserves the natural patina developed over decades of use.
