What is an etagere used for?

An etagere is designed for displaying decorative objects, porcelain, and books across its multiple open shelves. It allows owners to organise small collections in drawing rooms and parlours. Historically, these pieces functioned as both storage and display furniture, keeping treasured items visible yet tidy. Today, they serve the exact same purpose in modern interiors.

How do I identify a Victorian whatnot?

Victorian whatnots typically feature three to six tiers supported by turned columns, barley twist uprights, or carved legs. They often incorporate burr walnut veneers and inlaid woodwork. Many examples include serpentine shelves or corner designs intended to fit smaller spaces. The presence of brass mounts and marquetry points towards mid to late nineteenth-century production.

Where should I place a corner etagere?

A corner etagere fits neatly into unused room junctions, making it ideal for compact spaces. It draws the eye upward and utilises vertical wall areas efficiently. Positioning one in a living room or hallway creates an attractive display focal point without blocking walking paths. Ensure the shelf dimensions match the corner angle before placement.
