How do I date a brass dressing table mirror?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, materials, and construction methods used in the frame and supports. Georgian and Regency pieces frequently pair mahogany with delicate brass inlay and swan neck handles, while Victorian and Edwardian examples often feature heavier cast brass or ornate figural work. Mid-century items, such as 1950s pieces, introduce different manufacturing signatures and simpler lines. Examining the screws, hinge mechanisms, and the bevelling of the glass also helps narrow down the period of production.

Were these mirrors used only on dressing tables?

While primarily designed for dressing tables and vanity setups to assist with grooming and dressing, many smaller or easel-backed versions were versatile enough for chests of drawers or sideboards. Some designs, such as French Baroque easel-back variants, were adaptable for wall mounting or placing on flat surfaces depending on the room arrangement.

How should I clean a vintage brass frame?

Cleaning vintage brass requires gentle dusting with a soft cloth to preserve the aged patina that collectors value. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip away the original surface finish or damage adjacent mirror glass. If the glass itself needs attention, apply a standard glass cleaner directly to a cloth rather than spraying near the metal frame to prevent moisture seepage.
