How were black and gold trays used?

Originally, these items served for carrying tea, holding correspondence, or displaying decorative items in formal rooms. Many larger examples functioned within the home for serving drinks or holding objects during social gatherings. Over time, owners repurposed flat serving pieces by mounting them onto custom stands to create low tables. Today, people utilise them both on furniture surfaces as trays and as standalone occasional tables.

Are papier-mâché trays durable?

Papier-mâché offers surprising strength and rigidity due to the compressed layers of paper and resin used in its construction. However, the material remains sensitive to excessive moisture and heat. Careful handling ensures the lacquer and gilt surface remains intact. Modern owners typically place them on stable surfaces away from direct sunlight and damp conditions.

How do I identify a Regency tray?

Regency pieces often display classic classical motifs, precise gilt borders, and substantial papier-mâché bases dating from the early nineteenth century. Makers such as Clay and Jennens & Bettridge produced notable examples during this period. Examining the underside and the style of the hand-painted landscape or floral decoration helps distinguish these early pieces from later Victorian reproductions.

What is the difference between English and Japanese trays?

English trays frequently employ papier-mâché decorated with Chinoiserie scenes or floral patterns influenced by Asian export goods. They often bear maker stamps or signatures on the reverse. Japanese pieces from the Meiji and Taisho periods utilise authentic lacquer techniques on wood bases, often featuring native flora, fauna, or traditional landscape scenes executed with exceptional metallic detail.
