What materials make up an art deco female figure?

Makers utilised bronze, spelter, marble, onyx, glass, wood, and ceramic. Many metal pieces feature cold-painted surfaces or applied patinas to enhance the garments and hair. Combined media such as bronze and ivory also appear frequently, supported by heavy stone bases that anchor the dynamic postures of the subjects.

Where were these figures manufactured?

France and Austria served as the primary hubs for production, housing the prominent foundries and independent studios of the era. Parisian salons and Viennese workshops generated the vast majority of sculpted dancers and lamps. English workshops also produced decorative lighting and figures, contributing to the broader European distribution of the style.

How do I identify a lamp versus a sculpture?

Lamp variations integrate electrical wiring, lamp holders or glass shades directly into the composition. Figures designed as table lamps often feature the female form holding a globe or standing beside an illuminated element. Standalone sculptures and figurines remain entirely solid, mounted purely for display upon decorative plinths or bases without functional hardware.

Are these pieces signed by artists?

Many examples bear cast signatures, incised signatures or foundry stamps on the base or lower drapery. Unsigned editions also exist, sometimes attributed to specific workshops based on stylistic markers and proportions. Documentation on the base often provides clues regarding the origin, even when the primary metal surface lacks an explicit artist mark.
