What is an antique record cabinet?

An antique record cabinet is a dedicated piece of furniture designed to store sound recordings, music sheets, or playback equipment. These units date primarily from the Edwardian era through the nineteen-thirties. They provide enclosed storage with shelves or vertical dividers tailored to the physical dimensions of early media. Many double as music cabinets or gramophone stands.

Can these cabinets hold modern vinyl?

Many Edwardian music cabinets and later nineteen-thirties record cabinets suit standard modern vinyl dimensions, though internal layouts vary. Some configurations were originally built for shellac discs or sheet music rather than twelve-inch LP records. Buyers should check internal vertical clearances before purchasing a piece for contemporary storage. Adjustments are rarely necessary for models explicitly designated for LP records.

What woods were used for these cabinets?

Cabinet makers utilised a range of hardwoods including mahogany, walnut, burr walnut, and rosewood. These timbers offered the necessary structural strength and aesthetic appeal for Edwardian and later interiors. Decorative additions often featured boxwood inlay, alongside brass hardware and occasional glass or mirror elements. Each wood type dictates the overall tone and visual weight of the piece.
