How were antique jardinieres used?

These vessels were placed directly inside principal rooms, often on matching pedestals, to house indoor palms and potted ferns. They protected fine furniture from water damage while adding a bold decorative accent to Victorian and Edwardian interiors.

What is the difference between a jardiniere and a cachepot?

A jardiniere typically holds soil and plants directly or functions as a standalone decorative centrepiece bowl. A cachepot specifically acts as an outer container designed to hide a plain utilitarian flowerpot sitting inside it.

How do I identify majolica glaze?

Majolica is characterised by vibrant, glossy coloured lead glazes applied directly over a white enamel ground or buff earthenware body. It frequently exhibits rich relief moulding depicting natural themes such as bamboo, leaves, or water plants.

Can these vessels hold water safely?

Stoneware and glazed ceramic pieces were originally fired to hold moisture, but hairline fractures can develop over long periods. It is wise to test the vessel or place a modern saucer inside to protect the interior from potential seepage.
