What is an antique oriental coffer?

An antique oriental coffer is a storage chest or trunk originating from Asian workshops or trade routes, built from timbers like camphor wood or hardwood. These pieces were traditionally used for travel, storing textiles or holding valuables, and they often feature brass hardware or lacquered surfaces.

How do I care for a lacquered chest?

Lacquered trunks require protection from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the surface from drying or cracking. Dust the piece gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical polishes that can damage the historical finish.

Where were Zanzibar chests made?

Zanzibar chests were produced in regions connected to Indian Ocean trade, including India and East Africa, using teak or rosewood. They are characterised by heavy brass studs, striking corner brackets and compartmentalised interiors designed for merchants.

How can I date an oriental storage box?

Dating relies on examining the construction techniques, timber species, hardware style and surface finishes such as lacquer or hand-painted decoration. Earlier pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries display distinct joinery methods compared to nineteenth-century export items.
