What is a smoker's bow chair?

A smoker's bow is a sturdy low-backed armchair featuring a continuous bentwood armrail and turned spindles. It was widely used in country houses and parlours. The low profile and robust elm seat made these chairs practical for daily sitting and relaxing near hearths.

How do I identify a Windsor chair?

A Windsor chair is defined by its solid wooden seat slab into which the legs and back spindles are driven directly. This construction method distinguishes it from framed upholstery. Most examples rely on mixed timbers, pairing oak frames with elm seats and ash spindles for structural flexibility.

What are stick back chairs?

Stick back chairs are vernacular seating forms constructed with simple steam-bent or straight wooden spindles tenoned directly into the seat. They originated in rural workshops as durable utility furniture. These pieces reflect regional English traditions and vary from simple farmhouse kitchen chairs to refined parlor seating.

Where were these chairs used?

These elbow chairs served practical functions across domestic spaces, from farmhouses and country cottages to studies and libraries. Their sturdy construction suited active daily environments. Over time, vernacular pieces moved from utility rooms into living areas as collectors appreciated their honest timber construction.
