How do I wind an antique lancet clock?

Use the appropriate winding key on the dial apertures, turning gently until you feel resistance. Avoid over-winding to protect the internal spring mechanism. Ensure the key matches the square arbor precisely to prevent slipping and wear on the components.

Where should I place a lancet clock?

Position your clock on a stable, level mantelpiece or shelf away from direct sunlight and drafts. A solid surface ensures the pendulum or balance wheel operates evenly. Keep the clock clear of exterior damp walls and temperature extremes to preserve the mahogany case and internal metalwork.

How do I tell a Georgian lancet clock from an Edwardian one?

Georgian and Regency lancet clocks often feature simpler, heavier mahogany cases with understated brass inlay. Their movements reflect earlier hand-finished craftsmanship. Edwardian examples frequently display lighter satinwood inlay and refined proportions, reflecting the revival of Sheraton styles around nineteen hundred.

Did these clocks always have striking movements?

Not all lancet clocks strike the hours. Many examples are timepieces designed purely to record the time without a bell or gong. Striking variants incorporate additional gear trains and hammers, often noted in descriptions as striking or ting tang movements.
