A purdonium is a specific type of coal box featuring a slanted front panel that drops open to reveal a removable metal liner. This layout kept the coal enclosed while providing quick access for tending the fire. Cabinetmakers produced them extensively during the Victorian and Edwardian periods in timber like oak and walnut, often supplying a matching small shovel stored in a side rack.

How were fireside boxes used?

These boxes sat directly beside the fireplace to keep coal, logs, or kindling within arm's reach of the hearth. The enclosed design kept coal dust contained and concealed the fuel from view. Many included metal liners to protect the wood from dampness and dirt, allowing the container to be lifted out easily for replenishment outdoors.

What metals were used?

Makers relied heavily on brass and copper for metal bins, coal helmets, and decorative mountings on wooden boxes. Iron and tole ware also appear, offering robust durability for daily handling. Polished brass accents were particularly popular during the nineteenth century to reflect the firelight within a room.

How do I date a wooden coal box?

Dating relies on timber choices, construction techniques, and stylistic markers such as Arts and Crafts or Art Nouveau motifs. Victorian pieces frequently use walnut or oak with heavy brass handles, while Edwardian versions often display lighter inlay work. Interior construction, such as hand-cut dovetails or the presence of original metal liners, helps confirm the era of manufacture.
