What were antique decorative baskets used for?

These pieces served various domestic functions, from holding fruit and visiting cards to containing potpourri or dried flowers. Some larger examples were designed specifically as hearth furniture or garden trugs. Their roles shifted according to material, with porcelain and silver versions displayed in formal reception rooms, while iron and brass variants operated practical hearth duties.

How do I date an antique basket?

Dating relies on stylistic markers, material composition, and any maker's marks stamped or painted on the base. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often carry registry marks or factory ciphers that narrow down the production decade. Comparing the decorative motifs, such as Neoclassical swags or Art Nouveau lines, against known period aesthetics provides further chronological clarity.

Are fire baskets different from table baskets?

Fire baskets are heavy-duty iron and brass grates built to hold coal or wood within a fireplace, contrasting entirely with delicate tabletop containers. They belong to the category due to their decorative cast iron backs and brass andirons. While table baskets focus on fine ceramic or metal ornamentation, fire baskets prioritise thermal endurance alongside aesthetic ironwork.

How should I clean antique porcelain baskets?

Cleaning requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush to protect delicate applied flowers and painted surfaces. Moisture can damage old adhesives or expose crazing in the glaze. Avoid chemical cleaning solutions entirely, particularly on pieces with gilt highlights or hand-coloured enamel details that might lift under friction.
