Antique Campaign Table
An antique campaign table brings ingenious folding design and rich timber into a room, made for travel and built to endure.
Antique Campaign Table
An antique campaign table encompasses folding, portable pieces originally designed for transport by officers on the move, spanning occasional tables, side tables, and games tables. The pieces found here reach from the Regency period through the Victorian era and into the early twentieth century.
Mahogany, Cuban mahogany, rosewood, and walnut appear alongside regional variations in teak, oak, beech, and fruitwood, often fitted with brass mounts for strength. Folding coaching tables, butler's trays, and carved Anglo-Indian variants show the breadth of forms available to a collector.
Victorian examples dominate the selection alongside Regency pieces, reflecting an era of extensive travel and refined domestic adaptability. These tables balance sturdy utility with compact folding mechanics suited to modern spaces.
Materials and Construction
Cabinetmakers utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, rosewood, and teak to withstand the rigours of transit without warping. Brass hinges, brackets, and corner pieces reinforce folding joints and structural points.
Intricate carving, pierce-carved fretwork, and inlay decorate specific regional pieces, particularly Anglo-Indian and colonial tea and side tables. Folding X-frames, removable trays, and collapsible stands demonstrate clever joinery designed for rapid packing.

Distinctions in Craft and Condition
Quality rests in the precision of the folding mechanism and the tightness of the joinery when assembled, separating utilitarian camp equipment from finer officer-grade furniture. The choice of timber grain, such as figured Cuban mahogany or rich rosewood, elevates the visual presence of a piece.
Original brass fittings and uncompromised hinges indicate superior original manufacture, whereas replaced hardware alters integrity. The crispness of carved detail on Anglo-Indian teak tables or the patination of leather-inset tops distinguishes exceptional examples.
