What is an antique bobbin chair?

An antique bobbin chair is a seat featuring frames shaped with repetitive rounded wooden turnings resembling spools of thread. These pieces date primarily from the nineteenth century with revivals of earlier seventeenth-century styles. They serve as decorative and functional seating options that introduce distinct tactile texture into traditional or modern rooms.

How do I care for cane and rush seats?

Cane and rush seating requires gentle cleaning with a slightly damp cloth to maintain natural moisture in the plant fibres. Avoid excessive moisture and direct heat sources to prevent the woven material from becoming brittle. Positioning these chairs away from intense sunlight preserves the structural integrity of the natural weaves over decades of daily use.

Where were bobbin chairs placed historically?

Historically, these chairs found placement in parlours, bedrooms, and libraries as occasional seating or comfortable reading chairs. Low bedroom variants suited dressing areas, while sturdy oak examples anchored communal spaces. Today, they adapt easily to living rooms and hallways as accent pieces that provide both utility and historic visual weight.

How can I distinguish a seventeenth-century piece from a nineteenth-century revival?

Seventeenth-century examples typically display heavy oak construction with pegged joinery and distinct vernacular wear patterns. Nineteenth-century revivals often utilise beech, walnut, or ebonised finishes with machine-assisted precision in the turning. Examining the tool marks, timber shrinkage, and interior joinery helps clarify the true age of the frame.
