This large animalier sculpture depicts a bear in a four-legged walking stance with an open mouth pose, dating from the late nineteenth century around 1890. Cast in heavy bronze with a brown finish, the piece weighs 5.5 kg and features detailed textured fur detail across its body. The bronze shows varied brown tones across the surface alongside minor handling wear. Measuring 16 cm high, 26 cm wide and 12 cm deep, the statue functions as a decorative object in a modern or traditional setting. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece within a Highland hunting lodge style scheme, the sculpture provides an established focal point for a room interior. The heavy cast form rests on four paws upon a flat surface, with realistic facial modelling and an open jaw. Minor handling marks and surface variations visible on the bronze indicate age and use over time. The solid construction allows for stable positioning on suitable furniture surfaces throughout the home interior.

FAQs

The Animalier movement originated in nineteenth-century France and focused on realistic depictions of animals, emphasizing naturalistic anatomy and physical movement.

These sculptures were generally cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting technique, followed by hand-chasing to create detailed surface textures such as fur.

Authentic period bronzes often show natural surface wear, hand-tooled finishing marks, integrated casting weight, and a natural aged patina rather than uniform chemical colouring.

A bronze sculpture functions well as a focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk, providing visual weight and texture alongside modern or classic decor.

Maintain bronze by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface patina from oxidisation.
