An aneroid barometer measures atmospheric pressure using a flexible metal box called an aneroid cell, without using liquid mercury. The design was invented in the mid-19th century by the French scientist Lucien Vidi.

Traditional barometers typically feature cases constructed from woods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, combined with brass bezels, glass dials, and delicate internal metal linkages.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit period-appropriate typography on the dial, hand-engraved or painted scales, traditional joinery on the wooden cases, and signs of age-related patination on the brass and metal components.

A vintage barometer can be mounted on a prominent wall as a focal point in a study or hallway, pairing well with traditional wood panels or serving as a contrasting element against minimalist neutral walls.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high moisture areas. Clean glass with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical polishes on aged brass surfaces.
