FAQs

Nineteenth-century genre painting typically depicts scenes from everyday life, often featuring narrative elements, human interaction, and moral or social commentary executed with realistic techniques.

These works generally utilise oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within heavily carved and gilded plaster-on-wood frames typical of the period.

Authentication involves examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, artist signatures, and provenance documentation, alongside the characteristics of the associated frame.

A historic painting can serve as a focal point in a contemporary room by pairing its traditional ornate frame with minimalist surrounding decor to create a balanced contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the canvas and frame clean using professional conservation methods.
