A miniature portrait is a small, highly detailed painting, typically executed on ivory, vellum, or card during the 18th and 19th centuries, often worn as jewellery or kept as a personal memento.

Traditional materials included thin slices of ivory, vellum, copper, or card as a base, painted with watercolour or gouache, and often protected behind convex glass within brass, gold, or wooden frames.

Authenticity is identified by examining the pigment application under magnification for stippling or hatching brushwork, checking for period-correct backing materials, and observing the natural yellowing or grain typical of antique ivory substrates.

These small artworks can be displayed grouped in a gallery wall arrangement, placed on a mantelpiece in a small easel, or integrated into a bookshelf display to add historical depth and intimate scale to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding exposure to extreme temperature fluctuations which can warp delicate substrates.
