Description

An English made teak military chest with its original brass corners and all but one of its original handles. Still with original unscrewable feet. Top right drawer has a stronger lock. This form of miltary chest were made over a long period from the early 19th to the early 20th century ~ the design of the skeleton escutceon with a straight bottom edge is for circa 1890.

Provenance: Major General Sir Robert Fanshawe, KCB, DSO (5 November 1863 – 24 August 1946) was a British Army general, who, during World War I, commanded the 48th (South Midland) Division from 1915 to 1918. He was the youngest of three brothers (Edward, Hew, and Robert) who all rose to command divisions or corps during the war.

I bought the chest locally; the vendor's grandmother used to clean house for him when he lived in Bath and called it the Major's Chest.

Date of Manufacture

Moxhams Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
