This modern British oil painting on board, titled "Cornish Harbour" by Bob Quixley, dates to 1960 and depicts a bustling coastal scene featuring blue fishing boats docked in front of stone cottages, a green hill, and flying seagulls. The original artwork sits inside a weathered, reddish-brown wooden frame with a distinct distressed finish, visible surface wear, and a simple flat moulding. The painting measures 44 cm high by 34 cm wide and 2 cm deep. This coastal artwork brings a vibrant nautical aesthetic to a living space and is suited for hanging above a sideboard in a hallway, dining room, or living area.

FAQs

Originating in the late nineteenth century in Cornwall, artists focused on en plein air painting, capturing natural coastal light, harbour scenes, and the daily lives of local fishing communities.

Artists during this period typically painted with oil paints applied directly onto canvas boards, hardboards, or stretched linen, framed in solid wooden moulding.

Authentication involves evaluating artist signatures, examining boat registration codes depicted in the scene, assessing paint age and craquelure, and reviewing gallery labels on the backing.

Original coastal oil paintings pair well with natural timber furniture, linen textiles, and neutral colour palettes to create a relaxed, ocean-inspired focal point.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, damp environments, and extreme heat sources; dust gently with a soft dry brush and avoid chemical liquid cleaners.
