Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

This sculpture depicts a 19th-century French military soldier in campaign dress standing upright, holding a rifle across his body. Modelled in dark brown patinated bronze, the figural work rests upon a naturalistic cast bronze ground and a polished red Griotte marble circular socle with moulded edges. The figure wears a kepi cap, a buttoned tunic with crossed straps, belted pouches, pleated trousers, and wrapped boots, displaying detailed facial features and realistic textile folds throughout the uniform. Measuring 54 cm high, 31 cm wide and 23 cm deep, the piece functions well on a mantelpiece in a study or gentleman's library. Place this work prominently on a flat surface to appreciate the sculptural detail from multiple angles.

FAQs

During the nineteenth century, French sculptors created detailed bronze figures depicting military personnel, capturing uniform specifications and historical gear with academic realism.

Sculptures from this era were typically cast using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, followed by hand-chiselling of surface details, application of chemical patinas, and mounting onto stone or marble socles.

Authentic period castings generally feature crisp cold-tooling, distinct foundry marks or artist signatures within the mould, and proportioned weight corresponding to solid bronze casting.

Position the sculpture on a mantelpiece, a structured office desk, or within a library shelving display alongside leather-bound books and structured artwork.

Dust the bronze figure using a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, apply clear microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the patina, and clean the marble base with a neutral, non-acidic cloth.
