The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this Antique Gilt Pocket Pedometer to the Victorian era.
This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.
The pedometer measures 40mm diameter excluding the stem and bow. The case is gilt metal and it has crisp engine turned detail to the back.
The glass lens is in lovely condition.
The dial is signed Payne, 163 New Bond Street, 1839, patent.
It is widely considered the first commercially successful, mass-promoted pedometer mechanism in the UK. The mechanism is based on a heavily balanced pivoted internal pendulum lever.

The markers on the dial indicate distance walked, with quarter mile markers.
Some short faint hairlines to the right-hand side of the dial.
William Payne moved to his New Bond Street premises in 1825 and in 1852 the company name was changed to Payne & Co so we would date this piece to the 1830s.
