Henry Winslow Family Portrait

1900 - 1920
Description

This profile drawing is held to be a portrait of the artist’s mother showing her in a high-collared dress and decorative hat. It shows the influence of the artist’s teacher, James MacNeill Whistler. The portrait is professionally mounted and presented in a narrow giltwood frame. It was purchased from the Gerald M. Norman Gallery in 1975.

The son of an architect, Henry Winslow was born in 1874 and educated in Boston, Massachusetts. Winslow first exhibited at the Paris Salon before settling in London around 1901 where he exhibited at the Royal Academy, Fine Art Society (1937) and Kensington Art Gallery (1949). He published a book of etchings and a volume of poems. Winslow’s death is variously recorded as 1953, 1955 or 1960. Examples of his artwork can be found at the British Museum.

This Edwardian profile drawing depicts the artist's mother in a high-collared dress and decorative hat, rendered in graphite on paper. The piece shows the influence of the artist's teacher, James MacNeill Whistler, and is presented behind glass with a slate grey mount inside a narrow gold-coloured giltwood frame. The paper shows visible ageing and tonal variation, and the frame has linear edge mouldings and mitred corners. Measuring 375 x 305 mm framed, the artwork is suited for display on a narrow wall space in a home library, study, or hallway. It hangs easily alongside other framed works of art in an English Country House interior setting.

Portrait sketches from this period typically showcase delicate graphite line work, emphasizing profile views, elaborate headwear, and structured garments popular at the turn of the twentieth century.

Artists commonly utilised graphite, charcoal, or ink on paper rag stock, often set within card mounts and finished with slender gilded wooden mouldings.

Genuine works on paper display natural toning or light foxing consistent with age, alongside continuous graphite sheen rather than the halftone dot patterns seen in photomechanical reproductions.

Hang the framed artwork within a modern gallery wall, or display it individually on a narrow wall space to create an intriguing focal point alongside neutral tones.

Mount the drawing using acid-free materials behind UV-filtering glass, avoiding placement in areas with direct sunlight or fluctuating humidity to prevent discoloration.
