This Edwardian large Buddha statue is an Asian trade sculpture from the 1900s, depicting a seated laughing Budai surrounded by small children in relief. The piece is made of plaster with a glazed finish and pigment, showing earthy green, brown, and off-white colouration, along with age-related wear such as chipping and surface losses around the head and base. The figure features detailed glazed drapery and an unfinished plaster base supporting the sculpture. Measuring Height : 50cm Width : 55cm Depth : 60cm, the statue sits comfortably on a sideboard top in a home interior. It works well in a hallway, living room, or study, providing a sculptural focal point that brings texture and character to a surface display.

FAQs

Budai, often called the Laughing Buddha, originates from 10th-century Chinese folklore representing a Chan Buddhist monk associated with good fortune, happiness, and contentment. In traditional iconography, his oversized belly and cheerful expression symbolize generosity and abundance.

Sculptors utilized cast plaster, terracotta, carved wood, and cold-cast resins, often applying hand-painted pigments, lead glazes, or lacquers to simulate aged bronze or glazed stoneware.

Authentic pieces from this period typically exhibit natural age wear, exposed underlying plaster cast seams, irregular glazing, and legitimate surface patina rather than uniform modern machine finishes.

Sculptural figures serve as grounding focal points on dark wood sideboards, inside recessed wall alcoves, or atop low minimalist plinths to introduce texture and historical contrast.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water, harsh solvents, or abrasive detergents, as moisture can compromise unsealed plaster bases and flaking glaze finishes.
