A Fine Set of Five Regency Watercolour Portraits in Rosewood Frames, Circa 1820

19th century
Description

A fine set of five early 19th-century watercolour portraits depicting three ladies and two gentlemen, each seated and dressed in fashionable period attire.

The portraits are delicately executed with fine attention to facial features, hairstyles and costume, capturing the individual character of each sitter. The ladies are depicted in elegant dresses, two holding books and one engaged in needlework, whilst the gentlemen wear formal coats and waistcoats.

Each watercolour is housed in a beautifully figured rosewood frame with a gilt foliate slip, the rich colour and grain of the timber providing an attractive contrast to the finely detailed portraits.

A charming and unusual collection, presented in superb condition throughout, which would make a particularly striking display when hung together.

English, circa 1820.

A set of five early 19th-century watercolour portraits depicts three ladies and two gentlemen, each seated and dressed in fashionable Regency attire. The ladies wear dark dresses, two holding books and one engaged in needlework, while the gentlemen wear formal dark coats and waistcoats over patterned waistcoats. Each watercolour is housed in a warm brown figured rosewood cushion frame with a gilt inner slip, glazed and mounted on paper. The suite measures 22.5 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Displayed together, the collection makes a striking arrangement for a staircase wall or hallway in a traditional home. The rich timber grain and polished finish of the frames contrast with the pale backgrounds of the paintings. The group is presented in clean condition with clear facial details and well-preserved pigments.

Regency watercolour portraits, produced predominantly between 1811 and 1830, feature seated or standing subjects rendered in watercolour on paper or vellum. These works depict subjects in period attire, mounted within wide veneered timber frames with gilded inner slips.

These portraits were executed using water-soluble pigments on paper or thin board. Frames from this era were constructed from pine bases with rosewood or mahogany veneers, bordered by gold leaf gilded wooden slips and hand-cut glass.

Authentic Regency portraits display period-accurate 1810s and 1820s hairstyles and dress style, natural pigment aging, and hand-cut cover glass. The backings often show historical paper sealing, iron tack fixings, and aged wood veneer construction.

Position the set in a structured linear grid or gallery arrangement on a neutral backdrop wall. Pairing dark timber frames with modern matte wall paint creates contrast between historical artwork and contemporary spaces.

Display watercolour artwork away from direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent fading and foxing. Clean frame glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth, ensuring no liquid glass cleaner contacts the wooden frame joints.
