This ceramic wall relief painting originates from the Netherlands in 1967 and represents mid-century modern style by the potter Henk Potters. The composition centres on a stylised figurative human motif surrounded by birds and spiral decorations, mounted upon a woven hessian background inside a wooden frame. Rich turquoise, deep blue, and brown glazes coat the ceramic tiles, which show glossy finishes and dark linear detailing across the figures and geometric framing. The artwork measures 38.5 cm high, 31.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this wall art piece mounts securely above a sideboard in a living room, dining area, or hallway. The textured hessian backdrop and colourful glazed elements create a striking focal point on an interior wall. The complete assembly retains its original layout without modifications, presenting the mid-century Dutch design clearly for display in modern spaces.

FAQs

Mid-century Dutch studio ceramic reliefs emerged during the post-war period, characterised by expressive figurative motifs, sculptural glazes, and experimental textured backings such as hessian or wood.

Artists crafted individual earthenware or stoneware elements, applied colourful glazes, fired the ceramic tiles, and subsequently assembled and mounted the compositions onto framed woven cloth or timber boards.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-incised artist signatures or dates on the reverse or ceramic surface, alongside age-appropriate wear to the timber frame and natural fiber backings.

Position the relief as a focal point above a modern sideboard or console table, pairing its tactile glazes with natural timber and muted wall tones to highlight its sculptural depth.

Dust the ceramic glaze elements gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on the porous backing fabric or unsealed wooden frame.
