‘Bow Street Office’ by Rowlandson & Pugin - Ackermann Microcosm of London - 1808 Hand-coloured Aquatint

19th century
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

1808 Hand-Coloured Aquatint ‘Bow Street Office’ By Rowlandson & Pugin — Ackermann Microcosm of London

A genuine, original Georgian hand-coloured aquatint engraving titled "Bow Street Office", published in London on March 1, 1808, by Rudolph Ackermann at The Repository of Arts, 101 Strand.

This piece is Plate Number 11 from the landmark publication The Microcosm of London. It illustrates a fascinating, high-contrast social scene inside the historic Bow Street Magistrates' Court—the administrative home of the famous 'Bow Street Runners' policing force.

The print represents a premier artistic collaboration of the period: precise architectural draftsmanship by Augustus Pugin and highly expressive, satirical character studies by the legendary Thomas Rowlandson. The plate features exceptional aquatint shading by the engraver Hill, beautifully enhanced by original, vibrant hand-applied watercolour washes.

The composition masterfully juxtaposes the wealthy and fashionable victims of crime on the left against a motley assortment of Georgian suspects, constables, and night-watchmen on the right under the gaze of the magistrate. The print is neatly mounted inside a contemporary white display mat board and is entirely ready for framing. A magnificent historical artifact and an ideal investment print for legal professionals, historians, or collectors of rare Londoniana.

This genuine 1800 period Georgian antique print is an original hand-coloured aquatint on paper and ink, titled "Bow Street Office" by Rowlandson and Pugin from Ackermann's Microcosm of London. The cream and grey paper exhibits ochre watercolour washes depicting a crowded court scene beneath a vaulted skylight, framed by a crisp plate impression line and mounted inside a cream card mat. The visible print aperture measures 28.0 cm wide by 23.3 cm high, while the outer mat board measures 39.5 cm wide by 33.5 cm high. Suitable for placement on a narrow wall space, the piece fits well in a gentleman's library or study. Hang the print securely using picture wire fixed to wall studs or a suitable picture hook.

Published between 1808 and 1810 by Rudolph Ackermann, the Microcosm of London is an illustrated publication featuring 104 hand-coloured aquatint plates that document London architectural landmarks, public institutions, and civic life.

Aquatint is an intaglio etching technique using powdered resin on a copper plate to achieve tonal gradients. Once printed on rag paper in monochrome or sepia ink, watercolours were applied by hand in specialized print workshops.

Authentic plates feature publication text along the lower margin citing Rudolph Ackermann and the date 1808, distinct plate-mark indents along the border, watermarked paper, and credits to Thomas Rowlandson for figures and Augustus Pugin for architecture.

Mount the print using neutral, acid-free card and a dark timber or gilded frame, then position it within a gallery wall layout in a study, hallway, or dining space.

Keep aquatints out of direct sunlight, framing them with UV-filtering glass and museum-grade conservation board to prevent light fading, paper foxing, and acid discolouration.
