This Vienna bronze figure dates from 1880 in the Victorian era. The sculpture is rendered in warm brown patinated bronze and stands on a shaped, dark marble pedestal base with visible figuring. The piece depicts a young farmer girl wearing a bonnet and carrying an integrated miniature rake behind her back, with an indistinct signature and the word Wien inscribed near the base. It measures 20 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this figurine is suited for display on a mantelpiece or within a gentleman's library. It brings a narrative sculptural element to a collection of desk ornaments or cabinet displays, offering a classic Victorian figural subject in bronze and marble that fits easily into traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

Austrian bronzes, frequently associated with Vienna foundries, gained international acclaim during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artisans specialised in detailed figurative works, rural subjects, and cold-painted miniature statues produced for European decorative markets.

These sculptures are created using cast bronze, an alloy predominantly made of copper and tin, constructed via the lost-wax method. The bronze is finished with acid-applied patinas or enamels and is commonly mounted on marble or onyx bases.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise casting detail, crisp tooling along clothing and hair, and natural wear patterns on high points. They often feature foundry stamps or artist signatures near the base, along with appropriate weight consistent with solid bronze.

Position a small bronze statuette on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table to serve as a tactile, classical accent. Pairing dark patinated metal with lighter contemporary textures creates balanced visual contrast within modern interiors.

Maintain the surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Occasional application of a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax will protect the patina from moisture and oxidisation without damaging the underlying metal.
