This Tibetan Thangka scroll painting dates from the late 19th or 20th century, created in the Tibetan Buddhist art style. Rendered in mineral pigment on cotton with a silk brocade frame, the piece displays vibrant hues of blue, orange, green, and gold against a textile backing, complemented by a patterned silk border. The artwork depicts the seated deity Manjushri holding a raised flaming sword and a wisdom sutra book resting on a lotus stem, positioned above a lotus throne within an aura halo, all surrounded by floral motifs, swirling clouds, and water details. The visual composition includes detailed orange and blue robes, green foliage, and a pink floral crown atop the central figure. Measuring 79 cm by 55 cm for the image itself and 132 cm by 75 cm to 91 cm including the silks, this scroll is designed for wall art placement, making it suitable to hang above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or study today.

A Thangka is a traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton or silk, typically depicting a deity, scene, or mandala. Historically, these scrolls served as portable teaching tools and aids for meditation within monasteries and private shrines.

Thangkas are traditionally painted using natural mineral pigments mixed with an animal glue binder on a cotton or silk canvas. Fine details often incorporate gold leaf for sacred embellishment, framed with woven silk brocade borders.

Authentic period pieces display natural age-related wear on the textile border, subtle mineral pigment colour variations, and hand-stitched silk mountings. Evidence of soot exposure from butter lamps and aging on the reverse fabric also indicate historical devotional use.

A Thangka can be displayed on a neutral feature wall or mounted within a protective perspex frame to safeguard the textiles. Positioning the piece above a console table or in a quiet reading area creates a focused artistic accent.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent fabric degradation and pigment fading. Dust gently using a soft dry brush and avoid liquid cleaning agents entirely.
