FAQs

Late medieval wooden reliefs were primarily created as devotional art for ecclesiastical settings, altarpieces, or private chapels. They feature narrative biblical scenes carved in high relief, often displaying elongated figure proportions, detailed drapery, and architectural details characteristic of Northern European Gothic craftsmanship.

Sculptors favoured durable local hardwoods, primarily oak, limewood, or pine. The carved surfaces were frequently prepared with a gesso layer before being painted with mineral-based polychrome pigments and gilded accents.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-tooling, such as gouge and chisel marks on the reverse side, together with natural timber shrinkage, age cracks along the grain, and layered wear or flaking to original paint finishes.

A medieval relief panel can be styled on a mantlepiece, bookshelf, or mounted on a plain wall with directional spotlighting to highlight its carved depth and aged texture against contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and paint flaking. Dust gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that could dissolve historic pigments.
