Art Deco Figure of a Boy Holding a Tray

1900 - 1920
Description

An Art Deco figure depicting a young boy kneeling while holding a shallow tray. Executed in a painted composition material, the figure displays stylised facial features, flowing drapery, and sculpted wavy hair.

The figure retains its original hand-painted finish, with soft green tones contrasting beautifully against the warm flesh tones and dark highlighted hair. The expressive pose and downward gaze naturally draw attention to the tray he is holding.

The reverse bears the registration mark Rd. 817899, dating the design to the early 1930s. Pieces of this nature were often produced as decorative yet functional objects, with the tray intended for flowers, calling cards, small displays, or other household uses.

The tray makes this an unusually flexible shop display piece, suitable for use as a display stand, catchall, presentation tray, or retail prop. A charming and characterful example of Art Deco design that would make a striking addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

This Art Deco decorative statue dates from the early 1930s and depicts a young boy kneeling while holding a clear glass rectangular tray. Executed in painted plaster, the figure has a cold-painted finish showing soft green tones on his shirt, warm brown flesh tones, and dark highlighted wavy hair. The sculpture stands 55 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 24.5 cm deep, resting on a black rectangular base. The reverse bears the registration mark Rd. 817899, establishing its period origins. The integral glass tray can accommodate decorative dried botanicals, flowers, or small household items, making the piece suitable for display on a sideboard top in traditional and contemporary interiors. The expressive kneeling pose and downward gaze direct focus towards the tray, combining decorative appeal with functional utility.

Art Deco figural statues typically feature stylised human forms, often depicted in theatrical, classical, or everyday poses. These pieces frequently integrated functional elements like receptacles, trays, or lamp bases directly into the sculptural design.

Most commercial figural statues of this period were cast from plaster of Paris or chalkware, painted by hand with cold enamels or lacquers, and fitted with glass or metal trays for practical use.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate wear, such as subtle paint flaking, surface crazing, and minor chipping near the base. Cast seams are often visible along the sides, and the weight reflects solid plaster rather than modern hollow resin.

Place the figure on a hallway console, sideboard, or desk to act as a catch-all tray for keys and personal items. Combining the vintage sculpture with modern minimalist accents creates an intriguing visual contrast.

Dust the surface lightly using a soft dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water, liquid detergents, or abrasive cleaners, as plaster is porous and cold-painted finishes can dissolve or lift easily.
