This early nineteenth-century oak straight back settle is a rustic farmhouse bench presented in a natural brown timber finish. The high straight back holds six decorative carved panels with floral and geometric motifs, flanked by outward-curving armrests supported by vertical posts. Below, the box seat has two lift-up lids with exposed iron hinges, opening to reveal interior storage space. The front base displays three carved panels with radiating half-fan designs, echoing the semicircles on the lower back panels. The piece measures 125 cm high, 172 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, with a seat height of 47 cm, and stands on plain wooden supports. It sits in solid original condition with age-related signs of wear and use visible across the timber surfaces. Position this bench in a country-style entrance hall, a spacious kitchen, or on a landing at the top of the stairs for practical seating and concealed storage. The deep storage box accommodates household linens, shoes, or everyday clutter out of sight. The robust oak construction stands up to daily use in high-traffic transitional zones of the home. The carved details and warm brown tones bring traditional character to rustic interiors, country houses, and period properties.

A settle is a traditional wooden bench featuring a high back and solid arms, often constructed with an integrated storage box beneath the hinged seat lid.

These settles are constructed from solid oak using mortise-and-tenon joinery, peg construction, panelling, and hand-carved decorative motifs across the backrest and base.

Authentic pieces feature irregular hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut joinery, historic wear around the armrests and base, and natural timber shrinkage across solid wood panels.

Place the settle in an entryway, hallway, or boot room to provide practical seating and storage, complemented by neutral wool cushions or linen textiles.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically while keeping the item clear of direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
