FAQs

Nineteenth-century portraiture frequently combined romanticised or classical realism with expressive brushwork, capturing both the likeness and the atmospheric mood of the subject within natural or domestic settings.

Authentic period pieces were typically created using oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas, housed within hand-carved wooden frames finished with composition ornamentation and true gold leaf or gilt layers.

Authenticity is assessed through microscopic examination of the canvas weave, the presence of natural craquelure in the oil paint layers, traditional joinery on the stretcher bars, and the ageing characteristics of the gilt frame.

Placing a grand historical artwork against a moody, saturated wall colour creates an intentional contrast that highlights the intricate craftsmanship of the gilded frame while grounding modern minimalist furniture schemes.

Paintings should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent canvas degradation and paint cracking, and cleaning should be strictly limited to professional conservation dusting.
