Description

This decorative anatomical study of a hand dates to the early twentieth century. It is made from terracotta and finished with a brushed plaster slip. A fragment of a label, bearing the remains of a number (possibly 83 or 85), is adhered to the base, suggesting that this was one of a series of anatomical studies produced for artists wishing to study the human form. Several small dabs of differently coloured oil paint are visible on the surface, which further supports this theory.

Anatomical hand models have been used since the 19th century as teaching aids and reference objects in fine art academies to help students understand musculature, tendon structure, and hand positioning.

Traditional study pieces were frequently cast in plaster, terracotta, or papier-mache, often finished with a gesso or plaster slip to highlight surface details and mimic human skin tones.

Authentic pieces usually display natural wear, subtle surface patination, hairline fissures in the plaster slip, and casting seams characteristic of historical production methods rather than modern resin casting.

Such pieces serve as striking sculptural objects when placed on bookshelves, desks, or mantelpieces, adding an intellectual and textural element to contemporary or eclectic interiors.

Plaster and terracotta are porous materials that should be kept away from moisture and direct sunlight. Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush and avoid liquid cleaning products.
