This Victorian occasional table dates from 1880 and employs bamboo, wood, paper, and lacquer in a warm brown tone. The piece possesses an octagonal two-tier construction with a bamboo cane frame, angled corner braces, and curved feet at the base. Both the top surface and the lower shelf display a decoupage arrangement of playing cards sealed beneath a clear varnish, bordered by patterned blue banding. Measuring 72 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 44 cm deep, this side table fits well at the end of a sofa in a living room, study, or sunlit conservatory. The sturdy multi-tiered form provides convenient surface space for lamps, books, or decorative items, while the lower shelf offers additional storage. The playful card motif introduces a whimsical character suited to traditional or eclectic interiors. This functional occasional table brings nineteenth-century craftsmanship and decorative charm to contemporary domestic settings.

Bamboo furniture gained immense popularity during the late nineteenth century in Britain as part of the Aesthetic Movement, driven by a fascination with East Asian art and design, often manufactured locally using imported bamboo or entire imported flat-pack components.

These tables were constructed using natural hollow bamboo cane frames joined with small iron pins or brass screws, combined with solid wooden cores, lacquer work, embossed leatherette, or decoupage paper surfaces sealed with varnish.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display natural patination and surface wear on the bamboo nodes, hand-applied burnt or scorched decorative markings, pine or soft-wood sub-frames beneath lacquered surfaces, and period-appropriate joint construction.

A bamboo occasional table serves as a textured accent piece beside an armchair, within a reading nook, or positioned in a sunroom to contrast structured modern furniture with organic materials and historical detail.

Keep bamboo furniture away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting, and clean the lacquered or decoupage surfaces gently using a dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemical solvents.
