Description

Fine Japanese antique (early 20thC) bronze sculpture of Hotei by Tsunemitsu, depicted pointing at the moon during the Tsukimi Festival (‘moon viewing’) and holding a staff in his left hand. Signed. 27.5cm high, x 14cm wide x 12cm deep, weight 1.8kg.

Good condition with some surface wear.

One of the Seven Lucky Gods, Hotei is the God of contentment and happiness, guardian of children, and patron of bartenders. He’s distinguished by his large belly and his equally enormous alms bag, which he carried everywhere. His very name is a pun: Hotei literally means ‘cloth sack’ and by extension, ‘glutton’. Hotei was a favourite subject for Zen monk-painters in China and Japan as early as the 13th century.

Date of Manufacture

Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art has dated this Japanese Bronze Hotei Sculpture to the 1910s.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Hotei, derived from the Chinese Budai, is traditionally depicted as a jovial, corpulent monk symbolising contentment, good fortune, and abundance in East Asian culture.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax method in copper alloys, followed by intricate hand-chasing and the application of chemical patination to achieve deep, rich brown or black surface tones.

Authentication involves examining the consistency of the casting, the depth and natural wear of the patina, the quality of hand-finishing details, and checking for artisan signatures or foundry marks.

Positioning the sculpture on a minimalist console table, mantelpiece, or within a dedicated display niche allows its sculptural form and rich metallic texture to serve as a sophisticated focal point.

Maintain antique bronzes by gently dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; avoid harsh cleaning agents, water, or abrasive polishes that can strip the historic patina.
