Meiji period metalwork refers to decorative and sculptural items produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912, characterised by exceptional technical mastery in bronze, iron, and mixed metals following the opening of trade with the West.

These sculptures were typically crafted using traditional lost-wax casting methods in bronze or shibuichi, often finished with chemical patination and paired with hand-carved wooden display stands.

Authentic pieces usually feature high-relief casting detail, naturalistic oxidisation patterns, artist signatures or foundry marks on the underside, and heavy, solid construction consistent with the period.

Such objects work well as focal points on a dark wood mantelpiece, a minimalist bookshelf, or a glass-topped console table, where their metallic texture contrasts cleanly with modern surfaces.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a dry microfibre cloth and kept away from direct moisture and chemical cleaners to preserve the original historic patina.
