Cold painted bronze refers to bronze sculptures that are painted with layers of oil-based paint rather than being fired in a kiln. This technique gained immense popularity in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, championed by foundries such as Franz Xaver Bergmann.

Authentic pieces are typically cast in hot bronze or brass using the lost-wax casting method to achieve fine anatomical details. The surface is then meticulously hand-painted with cold enamel colours before being left to dry without heat.

Authentic pieces often feature foundry marks, such as the Bergmann urn stamp or artist ciphers, alongside a heavy weight relative to their small size. Examination under magnification will typically reveal the characteristic crazing and wear patterns of aged oil paint over metal.

These small sculptures serve as excellent focal points when placed in environments that appreciate craftsmanship and curiosity. They look particularly striking styled on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or upon a stack of books on an office desk.

Cold painted bronzes are extremely delicate because the paint is not fired onto the metal surface. They should be kept out of direct sunlight, protected from high humidity, and cleaned only with a very soft, dry brush to prevent paint loss.
